Wood should be an ideal material for speakers because it lets sounds transmit quickly and absorbs unnecessary vibration (which is why it is used for musical instruments), but it is also a very difficult material to work with effectively in stereo accoustics. This is why it is very rare to see it in use in this area. JVC Kenwood developed technology to use wood as a material in speakers, called the “Wood Cone Speaker”. The sounds are richer and feel closer than traditional speaker output.

Saab 9-3 production to start in China in 2013 [UPDATE]

We knew that National Electric Vehicle Sweden planned to restart production of the last-gen Saab 9-3 at some point in the future, we just didn't know exactly when, or exactly where. As it turns out, the answers to those questions are soon, and China. Though NEVS had initially said it will build vehicles in Sweden before shipping them to China, the latest report from Autocar suggests that the cars will instead be built right in Quingdao starting later in 2013. That's right, this calendar year.

We can't help but find this design cute and witty, but mostly cute. London-based design studio We Play God flaunted a pig-themed USB hub. It consists of a long Momma Pig that acts as a USB board and little pig USB flash drives that stick to the mother pig's side looking like small ones are suckling. The designers also came up with a Pig Plug Board, where the mother pig is turned over and it works as an extension board for three-prong electrical plugs.

These design ideas have been around since late 2011 and we have yet to hear from the guys at We Play God.

In case you missed it, Google is launching a flurry of updates today for its YouTube for Google TV, Play Movies, Finance, and Currents apps. Yes, that's four apps all in all. First, Google has updated its YouTube for Google TV app with a simplified player screen.
Users can now also send YouTube videos to Google TV from their mobile devices. Up next is Google Currents, which has been updated with a new unsubscribe option to its overflow menu.

Now here is a novel idea from Diane Franklin, a Republican member of Missouri's state House of Representatives, who recently proposed to slap a sales tax on, of all things, violent video games. The proposal known as HB0157I is definitely part of the ripple effect of what happened in Newtown, Connecticut, late last year, where proceeds from the sales tax would then be channeled towards mental health programs and law enforcement, with hopes that future shootings can be prevented as and where possible.

Fiat brought out two new design concepts at the Detroit Auto Show, both intended to expand the appeal of its 500 Turbo and 500 Abarth models with upgraded and unique appointments inside and out. First up is the Fiat 500 "Cattiva," based on the 500 Turbo, painted with a vibrant Rame (Copper) exterior with contrasting Nero (Black) accents. The turbocharged 500 features gloss Nero headlamp buckets, parking lamp bezels, tail lamps and a roof-mounted spoiler. Special 16-inch alloys, painted satin dark gray, hint at the sport-tuned suspension inside each fender.

Lexus is evidently dead serious about removing some of the starch from its collar, as evidenced by the boldly styled new IS sedan just unveiled here at the Detroit Auto Show. We didn't know what to make of Lexus' entry-level sport sedan when we first saw images of it earlier this week. Dominated by the gaping maw of a spindle grille and flanked by headlamps with Nike swoosh daytime running lamps, the photos showed a distinctive (if not completely cohesive) design. Having now seen the design in the metal, we have to admit it comes together better than it does on screen.
