Peruvian developer bids to turn Packard plant into upscale go kart track

Peruvian developer bids to turn Packard plant into upscale go kart track

The last time a car was made at Detroit's infamously derelict Packard plant was in 1958. Though it's been used for a variety of purposes since, these days it stands empty, an icon of urban decay. But that doesn't mean nobody's trying to do anything about it. The county recently put it up for auction, the winning bid placed by a doctor from Texas who quickly emerged as a quack.

Saddleback Leather Co. Dry Bag review

Saddleback Leather Co. Dry Bag review

Several years ago, I reviewed Saddleback Leather Company's Waterbag, an excellent piece of hardy luggage I use to this day. While I do not use it everyday, my wife and I often use it when going on weekend or overnight trips together. It is perfectly sized for a couple of days worth of clothes for the two of us or for just myself for a week. It is big, some might say huge, and not for most folks to drag around daily.

Google Glass Wearer Evicted From Seattle Eatery

Google Glass Wearer Evicted From Seattle Eatery

With a device like Google Glass, you can be sure that it would not stray too far away from controversy. After all, privacy issues would surely be raised from time to time, and the latest person to have been evicted from a public area because he or she is wearing a pair of Google Glass would be Nick Starr. Starr was wearing a pair of Google Glass at the Lost Lake Café & Lounge, when the request was made by the establishment to remove the Google Glass – a request that Starr denied to follow, which promptly saw him being asked to leave the premises.

Moto G rooted and unlocked

Moto G rooted and unlocked

The Moto G might not be the best device in the world, but for less than $200 there are sure to be a lot of people who will find it hard to resist picking one up. So just how easy will it be to tinker with this 10th wonder of the world. Pretty darn easy, if these instructions for rooting and unlocking its bootloader at Modaco are anything to go by. Paul O'Brien comes through with the downloads and method needed to get going.

HTC To Improve Profit Margins By Enlisting Spreadtrum, Broadcom, ST Ericsson For Chipsets

While HTC has been known to put out some pretty impressive devices, they have not been having the same amount of success that Android manufacturers such as Samsung are experiencing. In fact it was only recently that HTC announced an operating loss of $101 million, but it looks like the Taiwanese company might have figured out a way to fight back. For the most part HTC relies on Qualcomm for their supply of chipsets that has made its way into devices like the HTC One and the HTC One Max, and will use different Qualcomm models depending on whether the phone is a high-end or a low-end one.

Chuwi V88 Is An iPad Clone That Will Cost You $177

If you think that the tablet in the image above is an iPad from Apple, you would be mistaken, although you could be forgiven for thinking so. Upon first glance the Chuwi V88 does indeed resemble Apple's iPad (the older models at least), and while its design does look like the iPad, its size at 7.9" would feel more like the iPad mini. In any case if you're wondering who Chuwi are, you can't be blamed if you don't know because they are one of the many manufacturers in China who are responsible for putting out Android-based tablets and smartphones for the Chinese market.

Budweiser's Knitbot Will Knit Christmas Sweaters Based On Tweets

Christmas sweaters have gotten a rather bad rep for being ugly and otherwise rather corny, despite their well intentions to keep its wearer warm during the festive season, but it seems that despite the bad rep, it has not stopped companies from producing them and over in the UK, beer company Budweiser has launched a #Jumper4des campaign where the more times the hashtags are tweeted, the more jumpers will be made via the Knitbot machine, which is a machine powered by Twitter mentions.

Oppo Find 7 teased in a first official photo

Oppo has posted the first official photo of its upcoming Find 7 flagship on its Weibo page. The teaser image shows just the back of the phone - but its enough to give us a better idea of what the phone would look like. The photo shows that the Find 7 will have some sort of reflective material used for its back panel and won't stick with the matte finish of the Find 5. Oppo calls it a "holographic mirror design" and promises the phone to be another Oppo classic.

Strong words, indeed, but we definitely like what we see. The edges of the glass back look to be chamfered and you can spot the metal frame surrounding the phone.

Stephen King's Christine lives, and it's angry

Stephen King's Christine lives, and it's angry

Can an object really be cursed. That's certainly up for debate, but what isn't is that modern society tends to immortalize cursed objects on the big screen. Alongside the house from The Amityville Horror, it's hard to think up an object with a more disturbing history than the red and white, 1958 Plymouth Fury from Stephen King's Christine.
Christopher Rutkowski, that movie-car loving enthusiast that runs The Aficionauto YouTube channel is apparently willing to risk his soul, though, because his latest video features a 1958 Plymouth Fury Coupe with parts sourced from cars damaged during production of the 1983 film.

Possible Super Smash Bros. Release Date Hinted By GameStop

Nintendo's upcoming Super Smash Bros. is slated to arrive on the Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo Wii U come 2014, although at the moment no specific dates have been revealed yet, at least until recently when GameStop updated their database and revealed a possible release date which has been set for the 8th of April 2014 for both the 3DS and the Wii U console. We're not sure if GameStop is speculating on a release date, or if they knew something and might have accidentally let the cat out of the bag a little earlier than expected.

T-Mobile Xperia Z1 Render Surfaces Once Again

T-Mobile Xperia Z1 Render Surfaces Once Again

Sony launched the Xperia Z1 smartphone earlier this year and since then it has been rumored that T-Mobile is going to carry it. The carrier itself is yet to confirm if it has any intentions to carry the latest from Sony, but we have already seen a render of the device with its branding on it. Another render of the T-Mobile Xperia Z1 has surfaced, this time showing the front of the device as well. Magenta hasn't made an official announcement as yet and it is not known when it intends to do so.
A few differences have been noted in this leaked render as compared to the official render of the Xperia Z1 released by Sony.

Xbox Video Launched On The Web, Windows Phone App Coming Soon

Microsoft today launched its Xbox Video service on the web, prior to launching the service's app for Windows Phone devices. Just like the Xbox Video app for Windows 8.1, the web version will offer users access to TV shows and movies through video.xbox.com. The web version of Xbox Video looks quite like the Xbox Music's web version. The service has actually been developed to replace Microsoft's outdated Zune video service, which no longer allows customers to access media content. Through the web version, users can stream TV shows and movies in the browser itself, though Microsoft's Silverlight plug-in is going to be required.

A closer look at the 2015 Subaru WRX

For enthusiasts, the debut of the 2015 Subaru WRX was arguably one of the more important happenings at last week's LA Auto Show. After all, the 'Rex has been one of our perennial favorite all-weather sports cars, able to offer big thrills in any clime thanks to its turbocharged engine, manual gearbox and top-notch all-wheel-drive system. For 2015, some big changes have been made to our favorite Subie, including the removal of the hatchback body style and availability of a continuously variable transmission.

Man nearly killed by car in Russia, no dash cam involved

Man nearly killed by car in Russia, no dash cam involved

Russia. Cars are just more dangerous in Russia. You might disagree with that; argue that it's just the roads of the former Soviet Union that will kill you (and to be fair, there's plenty evidence to suggest that's true). Watch this video, though. It's the cars that are the real killers.

This poor soul had - we're assuming he's lost it by now - a job at a car dealership, and was attempting to put an Audi up on a lift. The only problem with the plan is that he forgot to set the handbrake.

Since it hit the market with a bang, the SRT Viper has mainly soldiered on making nothing more than a whimper. Demand for the reborn, V10-powered rocket has struggled, although SRT boss Ralph Gilles remains committed to the slinky serpent, according to a report from Wards. "The plant is booked solid. We actually have several hundred units outstanding we still have to build," Gilles told Wards.

This Xbox One Mini Takes 3D Printing To Another Level

We know it'll be only a matter of time until Microsoft releases a slimmer version of its Xbox One, especially when you consider how heavy the dang console is when compared to the PlayStation 4. The slimming down of the Xbox One will inevitably happen some time in the console's future, although if you can't wait to get your hands on a smaller Xbox One, then the next best thing would have to be this 3D-printed Xbox One.

Steam Reviews Beta Goes Live

Valve's Steam gaming platform has a plethora of games to choose from, and with so many to choose from, how do you know which game is good and worth your money. Of course one could also go online and search for reviews, but wouldn't it be more convenient if it were all in one place. Well that's what Valve is looking to do as they have announced the launch of Steam Reviews.

In Russia, road crashes into you!

In Russia, road crashes into you!

Russia can be a scary place to drive. Between the tank crossings, meteors, bears, geysers, bus drivers, lightning strikes, semis and otherwise generally insane accidents, we get the sense that you'd be taking your life in your hands every time you climbed behind the wheel. With all the insanity on Russian roads, it was only a matter of time the road itself got in on the action, as you can see in this video. Apparently a water main break caused the road to just sort of erupt, which we imagine would be a terrifying way to go.

We have seen Nokia consistently take shots at the competition through a variety of mediums. It mocked Apple's choice of colors for the iPhone 5c by tweeting a picture of its Lumia smartphones with the caption “Imitation is the best form of flattery.” Only recently it took a shot at BlackBerry through Twitter as well. The latest target is the iPad Air, a tablet that the Nokia Lumia 2520 is going up against. The tablet's UK highlights its several features at the expense of the new Apple iPad.

Grand Theft Auto-style short ends with distracted driving PSA

Government agencies and private companies alike are trying to get the word out about the dangers of distracted driving. While many – including the recent mini-movie from Wernor Herzog – involve telling the tales of real lives affected by distracted driving, a recent film competition in Ireland gave us something that looks more like an available mission in Grand Theft Auto V. According to Road Safety GB, the competition was put on by the Irish Road Safety Authority and an insurance company called Setanta, and the winning video, titled "Wheelman," was screened earlier this month at the Cork Film Festival.

Nokia Lumia 1520 Low On Stock In Stores As Well

Recently we reported that apparently due to shortages in supply, the Nokia Lumia 1520 could have been delayed for AT&T customers and those who ordered from Microsoft's online store as well. Now if you were thinking that it might be a better, if not clever, idea to head on over to your local AT&T store to pick up the handset in person, you'd be out of luck too. According to the folks at WPCentral who first reported the original low supply, they claim to have called around several AT&T outlets and found out that they were low on stock too. In fact some outlets claim that they have to receive any of the handsets at all.

On September 30, we held the Ubergizmo Digital Fall 2013 party, which was co-produced with Stained Glass Labs, as the closing party of the Glazed conference. Digital Fall 2013 was held in a night club in San Francisco, and featured a Tech Fashion Show with a lot of wearable devices being shown on the runaway. Lytro Manages To Raise $40 Million In Funding Towards New Products

Back in 2011, the Lytro camera was introduced. The camera was unique not just in terms of its design, but its functionality as well. It did not look like your typical camera but what made it pretty interesting was how photographers could capture images without having to worry about focus because the focusing could be added post-shooting through Lytro's software. This allowed photographers to capture their photos in the moment without having to worry about whether or not their subject is in focus, or if there might be another object to focus on.
