Google might give away 100GB of free cloud storage to Chromebook buyers

. Consumers who bought one of Google's (GOOG) browser-based Chromebook computers may soon be getting 100GB of free cloud storage through Google Drive. A man by the name of François Beaufort recently discovered a piece of code in the Chromium source that states "Get 100 GB free with Google Drive,” according to Chrome Story. Google normally charges $4.99 per month for the 100GB option, so the Mountain View-based company's generosity will allow Chromebook owners to save almost $60 a year.

GM sticking with Commonwealth despite ousting Ewanick

According to reports from Adweek and The Wall Street Journal, General Motors is sticking with in-house ad agency, Commonwealth. This news comes despite the fact that GM recently informed Joel Ewanick, the brains behind the firm, that his services were no longer necessary. These reports further speculation that it was more than just a botched sponsorship deal with sports team Manchester United that led to the global marketing boss' demise.

Once upon a not so long ago, I owned a 1971 Lincoln Continental Mark III. At least, that's the message Microsoft was apparently trying to send to Motorola on Tuesday when two of its lawyers posted a message on the company's official blog asking the Google (GOOG) owned device manufacturer ever-so-nicely to come up with an appropriate settlement to put all those nasty patent suits in the past.
“Microsoft has always been, and remains open to, a settlement of our patent litigation with Motorola,” wrote Brad Smith and Horacio Gutierrez.

Lenovo must have struck a chord with schools looking for some rough-and-tumble ThinkPads, as it's bringing out the ThinkPad X131e even while teachers are still drafting their course plans for the fall semester. The new model keeps that better-than-military ruggedness in an 11.6-inch laptop while freshening the choices of AMD E-series chips or their Intel-made Celeron and Core i3 challengers. Dolby Advanced Audio even gives the speakers boost when it's not a matter of all work and no play. Educators, in turn, get the usual options for extended support or customizing the laptops with a little school pride.

It's powered by a 1GHz single-core processor and comes with 384MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage (unlike the 1.4GHz and 512MB of RAM found in the Omnia W).

If you have been gaming for a while now, you've probably noticed that games have started adopting the freemium model. In case you're wondering what that is, the freemium model is where games are free to play, but players will instead pay the developer by buying in-game items or perks using real money. This could potentially lead to the developer earning more than they would if they had sold the game at a fixed price, but this model is also one that might not sit well with gamers who'd rather pay a flat fee and be granted access to everything. EA on the other hand seems to think that the freemium model is the future.

Chinese microbot walks on water, skims the surface of insect-inspired design

Bugs are creepy. You don't need to be an entomophobe to empathize with that sentiment. But bugs are also inspiring - to researchers in China, that is. Taking a cue from nature, a team of engineers from the country's School of Chemical Engineering and Technology have devised a microbot weighing just 0.02 lbs (11 grams) that can repeatedly jump across the surface of water without tanking. How'd they do it? Well, by using a highly repellent foam coating, the strider-like bot's legs are able to stay afloat with every 5.5 inch (14 cm) leap it makes, buffering the force that would normally plunge it below the H20.

GMC dissects the names of its own pickups

Ever wondered how the GMC Sierra 1500 got is name. Or why a 1x2-ton pickup can carry almost a 2,000 pound payload. General Motors sets the record straight. For starters, the Sierra name was first used to denote upscale trim packages in the 1970s and '80s. In 1989, the name was applied to all GMC full-size pickups. No big mystery there.

Then there's the 1500 moniker. GMC began using the numbers 1500, 2500 and 3500 in 1967. While the digits do indicate hauling capabilities, they aren't the trucks' actual cargo limits. In fact, they refer to the "first segment of vehicle identification numbers," GM says.

Happy 311th birthday, Detroit!

Happy 311th birthday, Detroit!

Detroit's significance to the history of the automobile is inarguable, and that makes it the only metropolis in America that we care to note when another candle is added to its cake. Today, the town that's known as both the Motor City and Motown celebrates its 311th birthday. It was founded on July 24, 1701 by French explorer Antoine de la Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, whose name was later immortalized as General Motors' luxury car brand. What began as a French fort and fur-trading settlement grew to become this country's hub of manufacturing in the 20th century, but now Detroit finds itself in a process of recalibration.

Google acquires Sparrow, the Apple-focused email app maker

Well, we can't exactly say we saw this one coming. Sparrow, maker of popular email apps for iOS and Mac OS X, has just announced that it's been acquired by Google. Expectedly, details on the acquisition are being kept under wraps at the moment, but company CEO Dom Leca has confirmed in a blog post that Sparrow will be joining the Gmail team at Google to "accomplish a bigger vision." Fans of the company's apps will be glad to know, however, that the team will "continue to make Sparrow available and provide support for our users" while also working on new things at Google.
