Everyday Carry Gear - Bryan Sherman

Everyday Carry Gear - Bryan Sherman

. As you have become aware, Julie challenged us to open our everyday carry bags to share what has become our standard gear. It was an interesting exercise, I used the opportunity to get rid of some gear that has remained in my bag, but when I was done, I still had a lot. You can click on the picture for a closer view. Let's take a look at my gear.

I figured I would categorize my gear to help sort things out:

Systems

Nexus 7. (upper right) I am surprised how much I like this tablet. I have used a number of tablets, and always thought I wanted something in this form factor. What do you know, I was right.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini now official

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini now official

We've been hearing a lot about the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini over the past several weeks, but it's time to give the rumor mill a rest — the device has been made official by Samsung as of this morning. The 4.3 inch device will come with qHD resolution, a 1.7GHz dual-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage (there's a microSD card slot to expand that), an 8 megapixel camera on the back and a 1.9 megapixel camera on the front. For software, we're looking at Android 4.2.2 with TouchWiz (which we assume is going to take up a sizable chunk of that 8GB of internal storage).

Windows 8.1 unveiled: new apps, new features and the return of the Start button

How big of an upgrade is Windows 8.1. Put it this way: we just might need to review the OS all over again. Microsoft just unveiled the first major update to Windows 8, and it includes tweaks to nearly every aspect of the operating system: the lock screen, Start menu, Windows Store and onscreen keyboard. As we saw in some leaked screenshots, Microsoft also updated its native apps and added some new ones, including a stopwatch and fresh calculator. In some cases, the update even changes the way you interact with the OS. Yes, that means the Start button is back (sort of).

Exec admits Benz should have created an E63 AMG Coupe

Exec admits Benz should have created an E63 AMG Coupe

Despite the fact that Mercedes-Benz seems to have AMG-ified nearly every model in its current lineup (not that we're complaining), it always seemed like sort of a misstep that this same treatment was never afforded to the E-Class Coupe (pictured). After all, Merc has created AMG versions of the E-Class in sedan and wagon form for some time now. For 2014, the revamped models are powered by the potent 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 and fitted with 4Matic all-wheel drive. According to BenzBoost.com, we aren't alone in our thoughts that omitting the E63 AMG Coupe was an error. "Seen from now, yes it was a mistake.

Next-gen Toyota Prius spied inside and out

Next-gen Toyota Prius spied inside and out

Toyota has built itself into the industry's standard-bearer when it comes to hybrids, and it isn't going to let the poster child for gas-electric vehicles get stale on the market. These spy shots captured in California are our first good look at the next-generation Prius, which could come to market wearing a 2015 model year designation. Even though it looks like Toyota may have blown its annual camouflage budget on this mule, we can clearly see that it will have the same iconic half-moon design that has been with the car since 2003.

Eidos Masks: Giving Humans Superpowers (of perception)

Eidos Masks: Giving Humans Superpowers (of perception)

The Eidos masks are really, really cool. New toys like Google Glass are neat, but augmented reality (AR) has been around forever. Going back to WWII-era active gun sights, forward to the heads-up displays of modern aircraft & automobiles, to smartphone apps that overlay directions, traffic conditions, restaurant reviews, or, through facial recognition, the name of an acquaintance or colleague; throughout the basic concept and implementation of AR has remained fundamentally unchanged.
The same could be said for virtual reality (VR), with one caveat: for practical purposes, it doesn't really like, you know, exist.

BMW's Best 1 Series Gives Back What You Put In. Every once in a while, I find myself, despite my solitary leanings and inherent modesty, working out in some kind of class setting. The tone and tenor of these classes ranges wildly – from the quiet, follow-the-leader variety, to those with a kind of Cult of Personality man or woman calling the shots, usually with idiom-laden shouting and theatrical hair.

Grid 2: Mono Edition is some kind of spendy video game

For years now, video game makers (and their marketing teams, more than likely) have sought to amp up the excitement of their new releases with wild and lavish special edition packages. Our own Call of Duty Prestige Master, John Neff, is sure to remember the functional night vision goggles that shipped with CoD's Modern Warfare 2, and the radio-controlled "surveillance vehicle" that was packed in with Black Ops.

Fans of Top Gear should have no trouble remembering the Peel P50. The infamous mini-minicar was first introduced in the early 1960s (and recently brought back into production), and starred in the now-infamous Top Gear test where host Jeremy Clarkson drove the tiny car through the offices of the BBC. Now, you, too, can get on the same sort of minuscule commuting action with this 1963 Peel P50 replica, available on eBay Motors for the Buy It Now price of $27,000. This P50 was built by Andy Carter's Modern Microcars UK, imported to the United States in 2009, and is currently registered and plated in California.
